Edvard Munch or the Anti-Scream
Exhibitions - From 19/02/2010 to 18/02/2010

The man we are showing you to-day is not the one you take him for.

Following its usual practice, the Pinacothèque de Paris is providing a new approach to Edvard Munch’s work, one of the most mythical, but equally one of the most mysterious, artists of the late 19th century and early 20th century.

It is amazing to note, so early in art history, an artist who broke away from all the conventions to which earlier artists and movements had accustomed us. It is fascinating to note that in the early 1880s, Munch attacked layers of color, he literally plowed the pictorial surfaces or else left the works outdoors under rain and snow, transferred photographs and silent films onto canvases and graphic works. Another surprise is the transgression with which he abolished all the boundaries between supports and techniques, in his engravings, drawings, paintings, sculptures, collages, photographs and films. He belongs to the tradition of William Turner and Gustave Courbet. He is the missing link between such artists as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Jean Dubuffet and Jackson Pollock in the history of Modernism. As an authentic innovator in the field of kineticism in art, this exhibition reveals a model in Avant-Garde terms and a breakthrough from all earlier artforms.

It was through those limitless excesses in his times, and above all through his attachment to the material qualities of paint and its supports, that Munch provided a powerful exploration of the deepest human feelings of life’s most fundamental experiments, even as the artistic world of that time was rather more absorbed by its relationships with nature and the social representations of the world. He has left an overwhelming œuvre of incomparable strength.

Salon du Livre de Paris - Paris Book Fair
Trade Shows - From 26/03/2010 to 31/03/2010

For thirty years, the Paris Book Fair has been carrying the quality and standard of French publishing to the very summit.
Alternately revered, shunned and criticized, it is nevertheless Europe’s leading cultural consumer exhibition.

The property of publishers and their associative body, the Syndicat National de l'Edition, the fair has always asserted its status as a reflection of the market, revealing talent and spotlighting ALL the authors and EVERY category of book.
For smaller publishing houses, the Paris Book Fair is also a guarantee of exposure, while at the same time furthering cultural diversity.
But the fair has to evolve as well, by being as near as it can to developments in forms of reading, and promoting the expressions of those changes in its special event areas.

It is no coincidence that the fair and France’s fixed book price law are both the same age. The Paris Book Fair remains a barrier to trivialization and standardization.
Thanks to its exhibitors, its institutional and private partners, and the ever greater number of media participants, the Paris Book Fair will once again be paying tribute to literature by inviting thirty foreign authors and sixty French authors to the fair. Fairgoers will be able to meet these guests in person at the 30th Anniversary Pavilion.

Finally, the event could not endure without the efforts made each year to offer young readers special events and eclectic dynamic meetings for the sole purpose of introducing them as much as possible to the simple joy of reading.

Robert Doisneau From Craft to Art
Exhibitions - From 13/01/2010 to 18/04/2010

Doisneau gave us some of the most iconic images of a certain era in France, but his work is often considered just a little too cutesy, not serious enough. The new exhibition at the (very serious) Cartier-Bresson Foundation hopes to show that his work is definitely worthy of respect, with around a hundred carefully selected photos of Paris and the suburbs.
So images are seen so often that – finally – you don’t even notice them. The famous photo of a kiss in front of Hôtel de Ville for example, one of Robert Doisneau’s most well know works. A great postcard, a nice poster, but is it art? This exhibition shows that it’s always good to back and look at Doisneau’s work and find the hidden depths: the framing is carefully chosen, and the scenes fleeting but moving and – begin born in the suburbs and a great admirer of Atget – few photographers have shown (and seen) Paris in the way he did.
The exhibition or originals prints brings together images from several important collections, showing a surprising seriousness to the photographer’s work, but also… his sense of humour. The photographer was a great friend of Cartier-Bresson, and the exhibition should be touching indeed.

Exhibitions - From 17/02/2010 to 24/05/2010

The exhibition Patrick Jouin - La substance du design, designed in collaboration with the designer and his team, highlights the methodology of a work by presenting around twenty projects through material and visual aids emblematic of the Agency's production, which was created ten years ago by Patrick Jouin.

The public will thus be able to go behind the scenes of a design agency which manages objects, scripts, texts, drawings, screenings, samples, prototypes and scale models, inventing dialogues between them, and, in turn, forming the chemistry/alchemy of creation.

Born in 1967, Patrick Jouin is one of the major protagonists of contemporary design on the French and international scene. Since 1999, his Parisian agency has distinguished itself by the diversity of its activities: construction design, architecture, industrial design, handicraft, scenographies, street furniture, etc.

The Agency PATRICK JOUIN ID has thus participated in numerous urban projects launched by the City of Paris, such as the creation of new public toilets and even Vélib' stations, but it has also responded to more 'handcrafted' orders which necessitate a specific savoir-faire.

Cité des Sciences La Vilette - Enjoy your meal Food from every angle
Exhibitions - From 02/02/2010 to 02/01/2011

Dear food-lovers, big and small

Eating is one of our major preoccupations as human beings and naturally so. Barely out of the womb, newborn infants clamour for the breast or bottle. They discover the taste of fats and their first flavour, sweetness. But, once they reach adolescence, will these almost independent eaters still be capable of finding their way across the food landscape? Do they know why and what they are eating? Are they able to discover happiness and health on the dinner plate?
