Grande Arche de La Défense

The inauguration of the Grande Arche (Great Arch) of La Defense coincide with a memorable anniversary, that of the bicentenary of the French Revolution on July 14th, 1989. This monumental creation stands as an unfilled cube which could hold the cathedral of Notre-Dame including its spire.

The Grande Arche was one of the Master Works undertaken during François Mitterrand’s presidency. This technological marvel is a strong symbol of the business district of La Defense. At 110 metres high, it dominates over the nearby towers. It ends the historic axis of Paris, which originates in a straight line from the Cour Carrée of the Louvre (where stands Pei’s pyramid), goes on by the avenue of Champs Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe.

The roof of the Grande Arche is like a belvedere from which you can discover a spectacular panorama of Western Paris, but also the Seine, the Sacré-Coeur, the Arc de Triomphe and the axis Eiffel Tower - Montparnasse Tower.

Good to know:
The construction of the Grande Arche required numerous studies, in particular on the wind effects and the composition of the concrete. The monument, weighing 300,000 tons, is 110 metres wide. Made of white Carrara marble, it is equipped with optical windows.

Timhotel’s tips and suggestions:
The futuristic environment of the district of La Défense with its 4,000 companies, 20,000 inhabitants and 160,000 employees is a tourist attraction in itself. 65 contemporary statues to discover. Among them are ‘The Thumb’ of César, ‘The man and the Woman’ of Miro, ‘Le Stabile’ of Moretti). And the audacious architecture of the towers (CNIT, EDF, Granite Tower, to mention a few).
