Notre-Dame de Paris
Its first stone was laid in 1163, in the presence of Pope Alexander III. In these medieval times, Paris aimed to become a holy city and foreshadowed in this cathedral a strong religious symbol.
Then came the French Revolution and period of excesses that led to the disassembly of the 13th century spire and the destruction of the major statues.
The 19th century re-established all its magnificence that Victor Hugo celebrated in his famous novel “Notre-Dame de Paris”.
Notre-Dame came survived the two world wars. More than ever, the cathedral keeps alive its influence amidst mankind and keeps on attracting believers and tourists in what is universally known as the greatest masterpiece of gothic art which has ever been built.
Overlooking the square, the west façade offers the well-known view of the cathedral. Its dimensions are impressive: 41 metres wide, 43 metres high up to the base of the towers and 63 metres up to the top. The middle rose measures 9,60 width and the spire headed with a rooster is 93 metres high.
The structure, entirely made in oak, is one of the oldest in Paris. It is 120 metres long, 13 metres wide, 40 metres in the transept, and 10 metres high. Above this framework, the lead roof weights 210 000 kilos.
In the towers are the bells. The biggest is 13 tons. In the other tower you can climb the 400 steps that lead to a platform. From there, you can admire the spire, the City Island and Paris.
Timhotel tips and suggestions:
The « kilometre Zero » that is symbolized by a copper star can be seen in the square. It is considered as the heart of Paris. The distances of all French roads are calculated from this point.
