Basilica of Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre

Looking like a white wedding cake on the hill of Montmartre. It is the best ever sold postcard in France or anywhere else. With its Romano-Bysantine style, inspired by oriental churches such as Hagia Sopha in Istanbul or San Marco in Venezia, the Sacré-Cœur basilica is THE must of French tourism.

The building was started in 1875 and only completed in 1914. At that time, the bell tower was already hosting the great, bell called « la Savoyarde » weighing some 19 tons. World War 1 delayed its consecration until 1919. It then became a new place of pilgrimage for the Christian community.

From the top of the high hill (la Butte), this internationally known symbol offers a great panoramic view.

Good to know :
This monument was built with the particular stone of Château-Landon, a town situated south-east of Paris. Its characteristics are to whiten under the combined effect of water, rain and sun. Surprisingly:  women and men take turns to pray night and day and this has been the tradition for 125 years.

Not to miss: the spectacular mosaic in the choir area and the 360° view from the dome.
