Le Louvre

At the origins, the Louvre was a fortress. Later it became a royal castle and used to host kings and emperors of France for more than 700 years. Its vocation as a museum lasts from 1793. It was extended in the middle of the 19th century and, more recently, in 1981 when the Treasury Ministry - formerly in the Richelieu aisle - was converted.

The Sino American architect Leoh Ming Pei conducted this extension initiative. Among his achievements are the famous glass pyramids. The biggest is situated in front of the main entrance, between two smaller ones, and the inverted pyramid that can be seen in the Carrousel gallery.

The museum collections are divided into 8 departments.
Oriental, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and roman antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculptures, Painting, Graphic Arts.

It is impossible to visit the biggest museum in the world in a single day. The Internet website of the Louvre suggests many thematic trails such as invitations to discover the masterpieces and the richness of the collections. One of them is called “the masterpieces of the Louvre” and allows you to admire the female stars of the museum: Venus of Milo, Victory of Samothrace, and Mona Lisa, the Joconde.

The Louvre also displays temporary exhibitions, offers workshops and guided tours; some of them are specially adapted for young people and their families.

Timhotel tips and suggestions:
Free entrance the first sunday of the month and night visits every wednesday.
Culture, tourism and shopping at the Carrousel du Louvre 7 days a week
The Carrousel is both a historical place and a shopping mall. In 1990, archaeologists discovered the defensive walls of the City dating from the 14th century. These walls remained unmoved and the conversion of the space took into account the historical dimensions of this discovery. From there, you can admire the inverted Pei’s pyramid.

Today, it is a very pleasant shopping mall, which houses many brands and restaurants. Most of them are open late into the evening, until 8.00 pm, even on Sundays.
