Tour Eiffel
You will never be able to say that you have visited Paris if you do not go and see the Eiffel Tower, the “Iron Lady” which challenges all architectural rules. The Eiffel Tower, which is both the symbol of Paris and France, is THE ‘not to be missed’ visit. It also beats all records in terms of visitors. More than 6 million in 2007.
It was built to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution and was aimed to be the highlight of the Universal Exhibition of 1899 to embody the French technological know-how.
This 300 metre tower (actually 324 m from the foot to the top of the antennas) was intended as a temporary building. It has turned into the emblem of the French nation, looking so light as lace in spite of 10 000 tons of steel. You can climb up to the second floor thanks to its 1 665 steps. Lifts can also deliver you comfortably to the top. From there, you will get the most fantastic panorama of Paris.
The Eiffel Tower is also a good place to taste the Parisian gastronomy. On the first floor, the restaurant ‘Altitude 95’ is brushing up its decoration (re-opening in March 2009). On the second floor, Alain Ducasse well-known chef, culminates at 125 metres from the ground.
In 2009, the Eiffel Tower will start its 19th beauty makeover. It will take one full year and 60 tons of paint to refresh it, from top to foot, in the traditional bronze colour.
