Beaubourg

The National Art and Cultural Centre Georges Pompidou is often called ‘Centre Beaubourg’, or just ‘Beaubourg’, from the name of the former district where it is situated. It is considered a cultural institution exclusively dedicated to modern and contemporary creation since its inauguration in 1977.

Georges Pompidou wished that plastic arts, theatre, music, films, books and activities should be hosted in a unique structure. A lively  and airy “avant-gardist” place, to allow strolling freely around the exhibition spaces showing all forms of Modern Art (since 1900) and Contemporary Art (since 1960).

Its architecture does not leave anyone indifferent. It is a large parallelepiped, made in glass with pipes and rails painted in bright colours. The technical elements are hanging outside to allow the maximum room space inside for the museum activities and exhibitions.

The Centre shows one of the two most important collections of Modern and Contemporary Art in the world along with the MOMA in New York, plus some 30 temporary exhibitions and many events. Under the same roof, you can also find the largest open reading library in Europe, cinemas and theatre, spaces dedicated to educational activities, and, bars and restaurant.

The Centre Pompidou meets with success: 18 000 visitors per day ! One of the institution characteristics is to open late in the evening, even up to 11 pm for specific temporary exhibitions.
