Touristic areas
Musée d’Orsay
The Orsay National Museum which stands along the left bank of the Seine in the VII° district gathers Western painting and sculpture from the period 1848 to 1914. It also displays photography, architecture, furniture and graphic arts.
The ‘Art Pompier’ trend takes a significant part in the collection. It took root in the second half of the 19 th century and was largely criticised by artists and intellectuals. Among them, was Emile Zola. The museum also takes its reputation with the paintings of the Impressionists.
This museum fills in the time peeriod between the collections of Le Louvre and those of the Museum of Modern Art within the Centre Georges Pompidou. The building itself can be seen as a work of art displaying on three levels the different trends from mid 18th to the beginning of the last century. Previously, the site was a railway station, specially built for the 1900 universal exhibition but soon closed down. Its architecture is typical of the period and reflects the beauty and elegance of its period and the surrounding neighbourhood.
The museum was inaugurated in 1986
