Les Invalides
In 1670, Louis XIV ordered the construction of a home to give bring help and assistance to the disabled soldiers, or those too old to serve in his armies. This large building site came second in importance after the château de Versailles’.
The architecture – a greek cross inside a square plan – is reminiscent of the Escorial, the palace of Philippe II of Spain. This military complex was achieved within three years and some 4,000 residents instead of the 2,000 anticipated could be housed and looked after. At that period, the Invalids included a church for the residents – called "choir of the residents" -, clothes and shoe workshops, a printing house, a home for the disabled and a military hospital.
The building of the church started in 1676 and lasted thrirty years. The church of the Dome, famous for its roof covered by 12 kilos of gold sheets became the pantheon of France military glories under Napoleon. Since 1840, the Dome has been housing the tomb of the Emperor with his two brothers and his son who was called the Eaglet.
The Musée de l’Armée (Army museum) benefits from an exceptional architectural site. It ranks itself among the greatest art and military history museums in the world. Nevertheless, it maintains its first vocation as a hundred residents still live within the structure or in the hospital.
Good to know:
The ashes of Napoelon lie in… 6 coffins ! One in tin, another in mahogany, then two in lead inside an ebony coffin protected by an oak coffin but this last one has been destroyed.
