Musée Picasso

This museum gathers a unique collection of the work of Picasso. All his life, the artist experienced different means of expressions like painting, drawing, sculpture or poetry. They are presented in a magnificent hotel, l’hôtel Salé, built between 1656 and 1659 in the picturesque Marais.

Inside, the outstanding decorations and the splendid main staircase will stun you. The restauration that was undertaken between 1974 and 1984 gave back the initial volumes to this hotel, already classified as a Historic Monument.  In this exceptional setting, you will discover the various bends and twists in the life of the artist who confided ‘I do not look, I find’.

The forms, the techniques and the supports succeed one to another. Paintings on canvass, plates, vases, masks, bronze sculptures, plaster, wood, scrap, costumes and opera sets …You can feel the genius of the Master through the different rooms which cover all his artistic production. The artist Diego Giacometti has specially created the ornamental elements for the museum: the chandeliers, the banquettes, the chairs, and the tables.

Good to know :
Why is this mansion is called " the Salty hotel ? The Parisians gave this name to the building. In the XVIIth century , it was the property of Pierre Aubert, Lord of Fontenay,. He had the responsibility to collect the ‘Gabelle’. A tax of sad report which was applied to salt. No doubt the Parisians found in this tax of another age ‘the bill rather ‘salty’ (a French expression meaning steep)!
