Passages et galeries
Discover an unusual network of galleries and shopping alleys, hidden from the bustling Parisian streets and boulevards. This invention, which took root two centuries ago, allowed creating a city within the city. It is a shopping paradise for strollers who love to walk through these alleys covered with ornate glass roofs. It is also a godsend for shops, shows, cafés and restaurants.
These ancestors of todays commercial centres were created in 1792. Their high architectural value and their charming environment will make you feel nostalgic for window shopping and centuries past. Looking at the old fashioned stores is also a very pleasant walk in this part of the capital that even some Parisians still ignore.
Some preferred by Timhotel:
• La Galerie Vivienne (Grands Boulevards et Palais Royal districts) : with its adjacent, la Galerie Colbert, it is one of the best well known and most beautiful covered alleys built in 1826. The ornaments decoration is outstanding and the shops very luxurious.
• Le Passage des Panoramas (11, boulevard Montmartre - 10, rue Saint-Marc.). It was created in 1800 on the grounds of the former Hotel de Montmorency – Luxembourg. Its name comes from the two huge rotundas that displayed large panoramic paintings over the Boulevard. This passage was very lively at this time when Offenbach was so popular at the Théâtre des Variétés nearby.
• Le Passage Choiseul (Grands Boulevards district). Its history is closely linked to literature. Alphonse Lemerre who was a famous poetry editor had a shop at n° 23 of the passage and Louis-Ferdinand Céline used to live there when he was a child. Its 190 metres length make it the longest in the capital.
• Le Passage Verdeau (Faubourg Montmartre district). Look up, you will see one of the most beautiful glass roofs of the capital, designed in the neoclassical style. You will find many antique shops which attract old book and postcard collectors.
• Les passages du Prado et Brady (Saint Denis district). Welcome to Islamabad and Pondichery. Here you will find tea and spice shops, clothes workshops and oriental souvenirs just as if you had flown to India. Nice place for exotic shopping and eating.
