    Jardin des Tuileries

This is a favourite walk in Paris among prestigious monuments and sites such as the Palais du Louvre, place de la Concorde, rue de Rivoli…

With the Carrousel, les Tuileries is the oldest public garden in the capital. It is a pure example of a garden ‘à la française’. In 1664, André Le Nôtre already renown for Vaux-le-Vicomte gardens redesigned them. The major lines of this green space remain the same today.

Take the time to walk from one side to the other, between Concorde and Palais Royal, up to the Louvre Pyramid. You will discover many 18th and 19th century statues (actually, you can count up to 100), the arc de Triomphe of the Carrousel which was erected in 1808 on Napoleon’s order to celebrate his victories. You will also come across contemporary statues of Henry Moore, Roy Lichtenstein or Jean Dubuffet.

    Good to know :
Do you know the meaning of « Tuileries » ? The clayey ground that was extracted on the premises was used to make tiles (in French « tuiles »). In the old times, a palace was standing here and has been hosting dynasties of kings and their families. It was one of the favourite places with the Louvre and Versailles.

    Timhotel gives you a hint:
Go and visit the « Musée de l’Orangerie » which is situated within the garden, at the corner of the Tuileries and place de la Concorde. You will have the chance to admire the very well-known painting of Claude Monet « Nymphéas » and also masterpieces of Renoir (‘Jeunes filles au piano’), Cezanne (‘Baigneurs’) Picasso, Derain, Matisse, Utrillo…
