Jardin du Luxembourg
It would be boring to name all the celebrities which frequented this garden but it’s nice to know that Rousseau and Diderot took pleasure from a walk here. Watteau also came to the Luxembourg when he was a young painter, so did David and Delacroix. In the 19th century, came the turn of Baudelaire, Chateaubriand, Lamartine. Even fictional characters as those in ‘Les Miserables » written by Victor Hugo visited it. The legend says that Balzac frequently came here at night to walk along the iron fence, wearing a dressing gown and holding a candle.
These famous railings circle the most romantic of Parisian gardens, the Luxembourg. These gardens were specially designed for Queen Marie de Medicis, between 1614 and 1631. They spread over almost 25 hectares. The queen also decided to have a house built in the style of a Florentine palace and a park to remind her of the Boboli gardens of her native Tuscany.
Many modifications occurred over the centuries until Baron Haussmann’s large-scale urbanism work. From that period up to now, the outlines have remained the same while this garden has been seen as a theatre by literary and historical figures.
Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Joseph Kessel, Gérard Philippe… These celebrities frequently met in the « Luco », a familiar name given to the garden. Also Lenine who was in love of the lady renting the chairs.
Do not leave the Luxembourg before visiting the Senat, within the palace of Luxembourg. Rubens decorated it with painting that you can now see at Le Louvre. They were showing the life of Marie de Medici. David was one of its famous hosts. This museum displays great temporary exhibitions.
Good to know:
This garden reserves nice botanical surprises. A horticulture school, bee hives – you can even take a beekeeping lesson! and an orchard with more than 200 varieties of apples and pears. Children can’t miss the charming wooden merry-go-round that Charles Garnier, the architect of the Opéra, created more than a century ago. Close-by is the original statue of Liberty, the same as in New York city, but much, much smaller.
