The department stores represent another emblem of the French touch and the French way of life. Even if you are not a fashion victim, visiting these stores is a must to see the magnificent pieces of 19th century architectural works.
The very first shopping palace was « Le Bon Marché ». In 1852, Aristide Boucicaut was the forerunner of a new consumption formula. He introduced a system allowing anyone to walk into a shop, have a look and feel free to buy or not. All prices were marked and goods could be exchanged if necessary. Emile Zola took his inspiration from “Le Bon Marché” to write his novel “Au bonheur des dames” (Ladies’ paradise). Fashion and “Rive Gauche” spirit meet here – as in the whole neighbourhood. The “Grande Epicerie” offers a very wide range of products from all over the world. We owe the iron framework to Gustave Eiffel.
This new concept was soon imitated. Then came “Le Printemps” and its close neighbour and rival ‘Les Galeries Lafayette’. At the turn of the century, business was flourishing and nothing could be too nice to present luxury goods in a lavish setting, and attract customers. Statues, golden ornaments, impressive stuccos… Art Deco dome for Le Printemps, neo-byzantine style for the Galeries Lafayette. Within these protected historical monuments, you can still find a concentration of the most famous worldwide names of fashion.
The youngest is ‘La Samaritaine’ which dates from 1905. It is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau and Art Deco on the right bank of the Seine. You can only admire its architecture from the outside at the moment, as it is undergoing renovation until 2011.
Good to know:
Brière, who was a reknown glass artist, created the glass roof of the main dome of the Printemps Haussmann. It was fully dismantled in 1939 in order to save it from potential bombing during WW2. In 1973, it took its place again in the department store which was classified a historical monument two years later.
