Champs-Elysées
« Ôôôh Champs-Elysées… ! » You may surprise yourself singing Joe Dassin’s well-known song while strolling along the most famous avenue on earth. Or have a thought for Jean Seberg, the lovely blonde girl playing a newspaper seller in Jean-Luc Godard’s film ‘A bout de souffle’?
On a more military theme, ‘Les Champs’ witnessed the glorious welcome given by the Parisians to General de Gaulle at the time of the Liberation.
Le Nôtre designed this 71 metre wide avenue in 1670, on the orders of Louis XIV. It was designed to allow the king to follow the sun’s journey, from the Tuileries gardens, until sunset, all along the line that became the ‘Champs Elysées’.
Its name comes from Greek mythology and means the life of heroes and honourable men in the other world.
Nowadays, this prestigious section of the ‘Voie Triomphale’ in the axis of Le Louvre and the Arch of the Defense, is the third most expensive avenue in the world with luxurious buildings, glamorous shops, cabarets, shows and famous cafés such as ‘Le Fouquet’s’.
Great events and national commemorations take place her : July 14th Bastille day parade, November 11 remembering the fallen of the wars, final day of Tour de France…
Timhotel’s tips and suggestions:
The French style ‘drugstore’ deserves your attention. The ‘Publicis’ that was imagined by Bleustein-Blanchet in 1958 has been entirely renovated in 2004. Shops, pharmacy, bookstore, tobacco shop with a huge collection of cigars attract night birds. You will also find an extraordinary wine cellar offering a wide range of great wines from France and foreign countries.
Shopping lovers will be spoilt, as most shops stay open late at night and on Sundays.
