La Fabrique du Luxe, Parisian merchants of objets d’art, exhibition
29/09/2018 - 27/01/2019
Parisian makers of luxury objects.
The "marchands merciers" (merchants of objets d'art in Paris) played an important role in 18th century artistic life. They acted as dealers, importers and collectors, playing a major role in the growth of the luxury industry at this time. Described by the philosopher Diderot as "merchant of all and doers of nothing", they were the forerunners of the modern interior designer, in that they were responsible for finding trinkets to beautify the homes of the aristocracy and high society figures.
The Cognacq-Jay Museum explores the idea of the marchands merciers, whose skills shaped society's tastes and defined trends.
