Van Dongen and the Bateau-Lavoir, exhibition
16/02/2018 - 26/08/2018
An influential period.
As part of the Dutch cultural year in France, the Museum of Montmartre has organised an exhibition centered on Van Dongen and the artists of the Bateau-Lavoir. In its permanent collections, the museum evokes how the Bateau-Lavoir, located a few steps from the current museum, played an important role in the birth of modern art in Paris.
Van Dongen lived at the Bateau-Lavoir from the end of the year 1905 and kept company in particular with Dutch artist Otto van Rees as well as Maurice Vlaminck, Andre Derain, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Van Dongen's stay at the Bateau-Lavoir greatly influenced the evolution of his work. The evolution of his work throughout his career is thus highlighted in this exhibition.
