Montparnasse: tradition of the night life 

In the 19th century there was in Montparnasse a very dense artistic community. Writers, painters, actors, sculptors arranged to meet in places that became mythical like the Dôme, la Coupole or yet la Rotonde, le Select or la Closerie des Lilas. Since these artists did not easily make a living, these cafés accepted to give them a table for preferential rates, allowing them to have essential meetings for the art history. Some painters even paid their bills with sketches, and these cafés were often transformed into improvised art galleries! 

The night life was thus particularly developed, and when Bobino opened its doors in 1873, the music-hall developed like wild fire Kiki, Damia, Georgius ou Mayol brought the house down,  just like the Group of the Six influenced by Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau. This heritage endures today and the Montparnasse district still contains world renowned theatres. In addition to Bobino, the Théâtre Montparnasse, the Théâtre de Poche, the Petit Montparnasse or more recently the Grand Point Virgule attract each year a big audience looking for quality shows. A little further away, le Petit Journal Montparnasse is one of the most popular jazz clubs of the Capital.  There are also many cinemas, about a good dozen. And since the night life never stops, the restaurants and the brasseries wait for the night owls until late at night, thus perpetuating a festive tradition peculiar to Montparnasse which finally never dried up.
