Al Musiqa, Voice and Music of the Arab World, exhibition
06/04/2018 - 19/08/2018
A thousand and one sounds.
The Philharmonie de Paris showcases the music of the Arab world with this ambitious exhibition. Through a festive and interactive journey, you will journey through fifteen centuries of musical history and travel from Cairo to the Hijaz desert!
The exhibition presents the musical heritage of the Arab world, encompassing 22 countries over several centuries. Al Musiqa, divided into several immersive spaces, is as playful as it is instructive. The visitor is invited to travel from the pre-Islamic era to the present day by crossing rooms recreating different atmospheres, such as that of an Egyptian cinema. Matali Crasset's highly graphic and colourful set design presents an Arab world in full swing, moving away from the picturesque. The exhibition showcases multiple musical instruments, but also works by contemporary artists.
Far from the dark TV news stories or Orientalist clichés, Al Musiqa gives a glimpse of a joyous, colourful and creative world. "We wanted to show the beauty and extreme richness of Arab cultures through music" says Véronique Rieffel. The exhibition will also be accompanied by concerts, storytelling shows and introductory music workshops for children.
