Folies Bergère

The Folies Bergère is a name which for more than two hundred years has evoked one of the world's most prestigious music halls; because it was at the Folies Bergère that during the 19th century, the first music hall variety show was born. Dedicated to entertainment, les Folies Bergère was to become an example of its type.

Born in the aftermath of the war of 1870, this place introduced the Belle Epoque to our times, all the stars of a difficult and popular art form, all the music, all the fashions from a century which was full of upheavals and changes.

In years gone by it was Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Joséphine Baker, Charles Trenet, Fernandel and Jean Gabin who immortalised the Folies Bergère, as well as the variety shows such as Folie je t'adore, Folies de Paris et Folies en folie. From the 90s, the style has changed and is now aimed more at musical comedy, notably with Fame in 1998, and more recently Danse Sing.

Having inspired both novelists and painters, such as Manet who in 1882 painted the famous Bar at the Folies Bergere showing a barmaid lost in thought, the Folies Bergère is an unforgettable place.
