Sainte-Chapelle - Holy Chapel

Completed in 1248, the Sainte-Chapelle was built by Louis IX to give a Paris home to the holy relics of the Passion of Christ.

In 1239 in fact, the future Saint Louis bought from Beaudoin II, Emperor of Constantinople, , the crown of thorns worn by Jesus. The sovereign thus endeavoured to have constructed a monumental reliquary.

Sainte-Chapelle , built in the heart of the Royal Palace on theîle de la Cité, with its two superimposed chapels, became an architectural model to emulate.
The upper chapel has a set of fifteen windows 15 meters high, the on the exceptionally rich iconographic programme.
