Pont Neuf
The Pont Neuf in Paris is a perfect example of Royal architecture; though perhaps not the most beautiful or intricate in artistic terms, this bridge is the best-known. It was to become the main passageway for anyone travelling from the Louvre to the Saint-Germain-des-Prés abbey on the Left Bank.
Its name means the "new bridge", as it was of a new design and built entirely of stone. The bridge was commissioned in 1578 by Henry III, and was opened by Henry IV in 1606. In the middle of the bridge, which rests on the île de la Cité, you can see an equestrian statue of Henry IV. Being such a novel design, this bridge was much talked about at the time. People would gather there to attend plays, fairs and exhibitions. In 1990 a restoration campaign began and the Pont Neuf, now the oldest standing bridge in Paris, retains its former glory.
