The Conciergerie

This monument alongside the Seine is the remnant of the oldest Parisian royal palace that was the palais de la Cité. What was originally a splendid Gothic palace and a royal residence, from Clovis to Philip the Fair, became abandoned in the late fourteenth century for the benefit of the Louvre and Vincennes. The Conciergerie then became a prison from the fifteenth century.

Many famous people were locked up there, including Marie Antoinette, particularly during the French Revolution.
